Imaginasian Land

Posted on April 01, 2008

Hey, I just realized I haven't written about this theater yet.  The Imaginasian Theater, located at 239 East 59th street, specializes in showcasing purely Asian cinema, tried and true.  It's a great venue and always has a steady rotation of abundant films playing week to week.  Right now a film called Race is playing, but the films that are about to be shown in the next couple of weeks are worth your attention (not that Race doesn't deserve said attention).

A live action adaptation of a Japanese comic book called Nana is beginning its run at Imaginasian starting April 4.  The film centers around two young Japanese girls who meet on a train to Tokyo and discover they have the same name, despite being complete polar opposites.  It is a great flick and garnered its fair share of awards and nominations over in the land of the rising sun.  As far as graphic novel adaptions go, this isn't for the Sin City fan, but it is just as strong aesthetically for those who pursue more human interpretations.

Also playing at this theater soon (April 11 to be exact) is U, Me, Aur Hum.  This focuses on a couple who meet on a romantic cruise, get involved, get married, followed by the realization that infidelity and hidden demons do not a healthy relationship make.  Ajay Devgan directs and stars in it.  The plot can be related to by millions of fellow young city dwellers who have ever had a one-nighter, then chose to pursue a tumultuous romance that ends with regret and inherited items instead of admitting you're an alcoholic who "casually" enjoys Soco Lime.  If don't relate yet, see the film and you'll understand.

Showtimes and details on these films and other Imaginasian doings can be found here
