Cinema Village Roundup
I guess I'll start doing summaries of what is going on at each theater from time to time, seeing as how Cinema Village is showing some interesting picks through March 28 this week. First up is Cool School, a new documentary by Morgan Neville about the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles, which served as an epicenter of artistic expression during our land's bongo-laiden, hippie emergence. Beatnicks and hobo writers alike flocked to this place in order to get a taste of non-McCarthy hubbaloo and helped broaden the scope for anyone aspiring to make art their career (in any respect). This doc features Irving Blum, Walter Hopps, and infamous pop-quiz hot shot Dennis Hopper (also a prominent figure in the emergence of the counterculture of the sixties, as well as an art enthusiast in his own right). Even though Ferus was such a prominent cornerstone, only now is it getting its proper due. Cool School is worth the admission.
Also playing this week are The Year My Parents Went On Vacation, I'm Not There, and Boarding Gate. Boarding Gate, if for nothing else, is worth a peek for its star Asia Argento. Asia's performance in this "thriller" is downright sizzling and mesmerizing (as well as her full-frontal wing tattoo, which is featured frequently throughout the flick). The Italian beauty makes this film a good time and should satisfy anyone that likes their moons, pizza pies, and amore with black female undergarments.
Cinema Village is located in, where else, the village. Check their site for tickets and specific showtimes.
